What are hydraulic jacks?

When you read about hydraulic jacks, it is often referred to hydraulic cylinders or hydraulic linear motors.
This confusion is generated by the fact that hydraulic cylinders are a part of hydraulic jacks: hydraulic jacks are lifting systems working thanks to the oil pushed by a pump in a hydraulic cylinder.

We can therefore say that hydraulic cylinders are a sub-system of hydraulic jacks.
